Oh Yeah ....Beemer Can Off Road

You read the title correctly.... Mr. McDreamy, my beautiful grey BMW 3-series sedan, can off road.

When I say off-road, I seriously mean off-road. I mean 4x4 recommended off-road. I mean you really should be driving a truck or jeep off-road. I mean my-beemer-was-not-made-for-that-kind-of-road off-road.

For this story, I give thanks our hotel concierge.

Let me back up a bit. My husband and I are in Sedona, Arizona for the holidays. We made it our mission to hike three or four of the “10 Most Recommended Hikes” while we are in town. One of the hikes took us to a place called "Devil's Bridge". Being the savvy tourists that we are, my husband and I asked the concierge to impart his wisdom to us before we embarked on this trek.

When the concierge told us that the road to the Devil's Bridge Trail was "a little rugged" we had no idea that what he meant to say "australian outback rugged". Our first clue should have been when he said that he takes his Kia Spectra out there and "…well.. you know...it does fine." Literally, word for word that is what he said. "It does fine." We asked him if there was a place to park that wasn't "a little rugged" and he said he would not recommend it because its two miles away from the trailhead.

So fast forward to the part where Tim and I have driven up to the cusp of this "rugged" road. There we paused as four jeeps came thumping and jumping like lottery balls in a spin wheel towards us while the passengers were staring wide-eyed and pointing at us. In retrospect, we should have turned back then.

“The guy said that it was safe for his Kia Spectra,” I reasoned with Tim, and tried to convince myself that it would be “fine” for our BMW 3 Series. After the jeeps passed, we were off. There was no turning back even when bumpy small rocks turn to boulders and ditches and mud puddles. Twenty nail-biting, never-ending minutes later ..whew... we arrived at the trail head.

Here is a little video snippet of McDreamy's Outback Excursion... Laugh with me:

McDreamy and I are suffering from post-traumatic stress, but that's okay because my husband is going to get a nice mammoth-sized manly man truck so that we never have to consider taking McDreamy off of the smoothly paved curvy seven-lane mountain highway ever again.

In fact, if the hike had not been my idea, I would have strongly suspected this whole adventure was a carefully crafted plot to get me to agree to the purchase of a truck, but alas.... the hike was my idea.... so anyway…. Beemer can off-road.

The Devil's Bridge was sooooo worth the hike. Here are a few pictures to scare my mother...
