"Having a baby is like getting a tattoo on your face, you need to certain it's what you want before you commit." -Excerpt from "Eat, Pray, Love"
Much to my mother's chagrin, this is my new favorite quote. Don't get me wrong, I am not against getting tattoos....This book captures the plight of today's thirty-something woman, stretches that plight to its logical conclusion, and then wraps it up into a nice package with a bow on top.
I understand her premise. Our grandmothers for the most part grew up with a clear set of expectations and limitations, our mothers grew up changing them, and we are now growing up without any.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH! That is how many of us feel. Independent. Alone. Conflicted. Certifiably Crazy. Ready to run. We are waiting to get married, buy houses, and have kids until our thirties, or we are doing those things in our twenties and then losing them in our thirties to find "ourselves".... It's great drama.
After I spent this summer living vicariously through Ms. Gilbert's fairly romanticized story of how she "found" herself, I now feel sane. To that my husband says, "Thank God!".... so funny.
If anyone reads "Eat, Pray, Love" and really expects to model their path to self discovery through it, beware. It's not meant for that purpose. While she is holding up a mirror to the face of thirty-something woman, she is mostly painting a portrait of herself.
Enjoy!
